How much does your reputation mean to you?

When did you last “google yourself?” I know it’s supposed to be the last word in vanity and should be kept as our own little secret, but as a business owner it should be something you add to your regular routine.


A while ago we wrote a blog about protecting your reputation on Social Media. It is important that you set up searches and messages so that you are alerted when anyone posts anything that could be detrimental to your business. You should also have a policy in place regarding what to do if it happens to you and who you allow to post on your page.


What about the rest of the great World Wide Web? A regular search of Google or other search engines should be a regular part of your routine. The internet is largely unregulated and a surprising amount of information is available about you and your business. You may find yourself on a directory site that offers a review facility that you didn’t realise you were listed on. What if someone had written something detrimental to your business on it and you didn’t know?


Your reputation is the most important selling point of your business. These are some tips to help you preserve it;

  1. Use Social Media notification facilities
  2. Make an internet search for your company and name part of your routine
  3. Ask to be removed from directories you did not ask to be part of
  4. If you are listed on a directory site make sure you receive notification when a review is added.
  5. Employ a company to run regular reputation checks for you

If you don't have time to run the checks and manage your online reputation then employ someone who can.  after all once you've lost your reputation you have probably lost everything.
